All these things turn people away because they only feel the frustration and don’t see the reward. You have to struggle with syntax and jargon or spend several days trying to get your computer to set up your programming environment. It’s almost a rite of passage to go through all these hoops. I think the way that we’ve thought about making this language and making this product is that there’s always a lot of jargon. We’re trying to keep the parts of programming that are interesting and cool and let you make fun and exciting games and apps, but take away the parts of programming that are kind of unnecessarily hard. You know, Hopscotch really is designed so it’s easy enough for kids, but what that means is that really anyone can use it because we’re not trying to dumb down programming. Samantha John: We’ve had a lot of senior citizens reach out and say, Hey, actually, I’m retired. So take me through how you make it less nerve-wracking not only for women, but also for any generation from kids to twenties, thirties, and 40 year-olds. Emily Grigely: For newcomers, it can be daunting. I thought, why didn’t anyone tell me that programming was awesome and creative and that you can make such cool stuff When I graduated, I talked my way into a programming job but I kept wondering, why didn’t they tell me this when I was a kid? How did all the boys find out and I didn’t? After that, I was always thinking about how I could make a product that girls would like that would get them into programming and teach them into programming. ![]() I got to show it to my senior class at our senior class dinner. It was a really meaningful, fun, and exciting project. My final project was a photo mosaic where I took pictures from our senior class and used them as tiles giant mosaics of photos of our campus. It was only in my senior year that I took a class on computational photography because I was interested in the photography angle. ![]() That’s not my thing, without even trying it or looking into it. I said, nope, computer science is not for me. I immediately threw out computer science. I remember I went to college and I went to an engineering school at Columbia University, and there were maybe 10 majors to choose from. ![]() I didn’t think that computers were really something for me. Samantha John: Hopscotch actually came from some ideas that I had had for a long time because I was not a kid who was super into technology. ![]() Can you please elaborate on how Hopscotch came to be? Check out the conversation below.Įmily Grigely: Hopscotch started around 2011. To learn more about how the app got started, as well as the brand’s appearance on Shark Tank, SBJ Host Emily Grigely spoke with Hopscotch co-founder and CEO Samantha John. It helps them learn valuable coding skills to create games, animations, and more, while also playing with other friends and family members on the app. This innovative app is designed for kids aged 10 to 16. The tech world can be intimidating for both children and parents alike, but luckily apps like Hopscotch make programming and coding easy to understand, creative, and downright fun. Has your child ever taken an interest in programming, but you have absolutely no clue where to help them start? Well, you certainly aren’t alone. ![]()
